Memory is a pencil
That sketches your future
Entangled with your past.
Memory draws the chains
That won’t let you grasp
The new life ahead.
Memory shades your destiny
With a misty shade of doom
That causes doubt and fear.
Grace is the eraser.
Ever find yourself in the middle of your busy day and God interrupts you with a sermon? I’m not talking about a sermon from a preacher or evangelist, but a sermon preached by a circumstance in our life.
It could be a car abandoned on the side of the road that speaks to us saying, “You need to rest, get a tune up or you are going to break down.”
Or a turtle trying to cross a well-traveled road in the middle of the day could be saying, “There is a time for everything. If you move too soon, you might get crushed.”
One of my favorites is when someone comes to us to tell us why we should not be in a relationship or friendship with someone who is known for the mistakes they make. They give us a list of faults and transgressions and say something like, “I know people can change but….”
We then get that niggling feeling to retreat or withhold our friendship and kindness. We might be tempted to avoid that person altogether. But the Lord reminds us of the grace we received when we chose to believe. In this sermon Holy Spirit guides us to these truths.
- He reminds us of 2 Corinthians 5:17 – 21
17 Now, if anyone is enfolded into Christ, he has become an entirely new creation. All that is related to the old order has vanished. Behold, everything is fresh and new. 18 And God has made all things new, and reconciled us to himself, and given us the ministry of reconciling others to God. 19 In other words, it was through the Anointed One that God was shepherding the world, not even keeping records of their transgressions, and he has entrusted to us the ministry of opening the door of reconciliation to God. 20 We are ambassadors of the Anointed One who carry the message of Christ to the world, as though God were tenderly pleading with them directly through our lips. So we tenderly plead with you on Christ’s behalf, “Turn back to God and be reconciled to him.” 21 For God made the only one who did not know sin to become sin for us, so that we who did not know righteousness might become the righteousness of God through our union with him. - He reminds us of 1 John 1:9,
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (ESV).
He reminds us that grace is an eraser.
